This Peregrine falcon / Wanderfalke (Falco peregrinus) was hunting from a power pylon which was standing in a reservoir in Ptuj/Slovenia. Instead of the many available ducks, the falcon was going after Common kingfishers / Eisvögel (Alcedo atthis), when they crossed the large water surface. In flight, the falcon could easily outrun (outfly?) the kingfisher, which reacted by dropping into the water every few meters. The falcon had to slow down every time and the kingfisher accelerated faster when taking off – making it safely to the other shore in several stages.
