In the breeding season 2022, House Martins / Mehlschwalben (Delichon urbicum) in a colony of roughly 80 natural nests started to occupy and build nests in three holes that a Green Woodpecker / Grünspecht (Picus viridis) had drilled in the styrofoam facade of St. Martins Lodge, Frauenkichen/Austria. The holes where in the corner area of the ceiling, in one case (left photo) the entire hole faced downwards. Nesting material was only visible in two of the three holes, one hole looked inconspicous from the outside but House Martins flew into the cavity and stayed longer periods. Nesting was not successful in either of the woodpecker holes.
