Peregrine Falcon cuts off entire wing in collision with power line

A Peregrine Falcon / Wanderfalke (Falco peregrinus) that I had ringed in Graz, Austria as a chick in 2021 (female SJS/Viktoria), was recovered in the city of Maribor, Slovenia on 16th December 2024 (61 km distance). It had apparently hit a power line and cut off its entire right wing, which was found under the cable as well (see photos by Franc Bracko below). The bird survived and was treated by Dr. Zlatko Aurelius Golob, but can of course never be released again.

SJS/Viktoria (top right) was the first Peregrine ever to be ringed in Austria, part of the first ever breeding in Graz and one of only very few ever to have hatched on a building in Austria. Photo from the day of ringing in 2021, Graz/Austria.
